So far the mainstream press has pretty much savaged Donald Trump, especially since he seems to have emerged as a serious candidate. But polls have shown that he would do worse against Barack Obama in a general election than any other conceivable Republican candidate except Sarah Palin.
At some point, the mainstream press, which has willfully overlooked all of Obama's lies, hypocrisies, and empty campaign promises for the past few years, will wake up and realize that they don't want to make Trump look like the buffoon that he is. In fact, their fondest wish should be for him to succeed in the Republican primaries.
Serious conservative commentators like Charles Krauthammer and Karl Rove have already realized this and have spoken out against Trump. Sooner or later the 90% of the press which votes Democratic will wake up and realize this too.
They will conclude that they should support him through the primary season. And that only after that should they allow themselves to spew their bile to their hearts' content.
How soon will they come to this realization?
