This is a story about a couple who have refused to divulge the sex of their child, Sasha, to all but a couple of close friends, and have tried to raise "it" in as gender-neutral a fashion as possible.
Now that Sasha is five years old and entering school, they have been forced to identify him as a boy. But the couple have objected to the different uniforms for boys and girls and insist that Sasha wear a girl's blouse with boy's pants.
Sasha's mother, Beck Laxton, said, "I wanted to avoid all that stereotyping. Stereotypes seem fundamentally stupid. Why would you want to slot people into boxes?"
It's certainly nice to hear from someone who is so enlightened, who realizes that stereotypes only exist because people are forced into them. Now we know: genetics and human nature have nothing to do with personality! Testosterone and estrogen have no effect! It's all just upbringing!
It will be interesting to see what kind of attitude Sasha will have towards his parents in the future. Will he resent them, or swallow their values whole?
Probably the latter. Since most children like being brought up as experiments.
