"Women in combat spells trouble"

Not sure about the grammatical correctness of the headline, but the linked article exhibits a lot of common sense about another problematic aspect of women in combat.

I think it's probably correct - "women" is a cumulative noun so one would actually use the word "spells" instead of "spell." :)

I disagree. If the verb referred to the first three words of the headline, it should be singular. But "women" is still plural, so it sounds wrong.

Would you say:

"Men is stronger"?
"Women is more nurturing"?

"Women in Combat" can be taken as a single thing, since it's the name, so to speak, of a movement, or philosophy, or something, and is virtually the same as "Putting Women in Combat", so "spells" does sound more correct to the American ear, at least. BTW, I give you credit for the Chavez link here:
Israeli Ladies in Combat

Actually, just put "Women in Combat" in quotes, and the spells seems perfectly all right, because you're referring to the title, or name, of an idea.

Okay, I'm outvoted.

BTW, I think you're getting me confused with Steve Sailer on that link, but thanks anyway. (It's certainly flattering to be confused with him.)
