Another vestigial sagittal crest

This is Shannon J. Miles, who is being charged today with having shot that sheriff's deputy in the back at that gas station in Houston yesterday:

From Wikipedia:

A sagittal crest is a ridge of bone running lengthwise along the midline of the top of the skull (at the sagittal suture) of many mammalian and reptilian skulls, among others.

The presence of this ridge of bone indicates that there are exceptionally strong jaw muscles. The sagittal crest serves primarily for attachment of the temporalis muscle, which is one of the main chewing muscles...

Sagittal crests are found in robust great apes, and some early hominids (Paranthropus). Prominent sagittal crests are found among male gorillas and orangutans, and do occur but only rarely in male chimpanzees such as Bili Apes.

The largest sagittal crest ever discovered in the human lineage belongs to the "Black Skull", Paranthropus aethiopicus, the earliest known robust hominid ancestor and the oldest robust australopithecine discovered to date. The prominence of the crest appears to have been an adaptation for the aethiopicus's heavy chewing, and the Black Skull's cheek teeth are correspondingly large. Smaller sagittal crests are also present on the skulls of other Paranthropines, including Paranthropus boisei and Paranthropus robustus.

Here is a picture of that skull:

In general, though, head shape is one area black guys tend to shine. Black men often look great with shaved or bald heads. Look at Michael Jordan, for instance. Hardly any white men are so lucky. This is why the wig industry thrives on black women trying to cover up bad hair and bald white men trying to cover up a misshapen dome.

From an aesthetic point of view, I'd agree with you. Whites, with their larger brain pans, tend to look more like stereotypical extraterrestrials when they shave their heads. But I was thinking more in terms of why a vestigial sagittal crest implies about what's inside the skull, especially in the case of a guy who'd just walk up behind a cop and shoot him in the back.

Check out Carl Pressley, he is white and has one of those heads... He killed his grandmother, her house keeper and possibly his mother.. Harkey farms murder in Texas

You're right, he does. Though when I Google-imaged him, a James Pressley, also came up, a black guy with even more of a crest.

John, dude, i think this discussion is going in the wrong way, not only does it smell of racism but you're trying to base your racism in faux scientific claims... upbringing and/or bad genetic mutations have more correlation with criminal behavior than just race or most certainly vestigial crests!XD i ended up here because I have one (and am not violently criminal:p also i'm caucasian) and i googled a bit about it, it's actually called a sagittal keel.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagittal_keel..and it's not really vestigial since the keel does not follow a trait that has occurred in a direct line from our ancestors, it's more a random mutation that does nothing useful, but a crest on the other hand rather evolves each time it is needed, more like a convergent evolution each time a creature(dinosaur, mammal, ape or human)needs more jaw power, that could practically be the difference between a crest and a keel, a crest is a trait of a species that is useful to its behavior and a keel is the mutation that allows a species to evolve a crest if needed, also to further bury your racist/foux geneticist opinion, Patrick Stewart has a keel, google his picture, is he an aggressive black? just to add, I have nothing against you I'm just spreading knowledge

Thank you for providing such a good example of the intellectual level of those who don't want to take a clear-eyed look at human differences.

Could it be that black men tend to have their heads shaved more often than others? And that is why we see the most prominent crests on them?

You're right, they do shave their heads more often. But even given that, there are enough white guys with short hair or who are balding that it would be fairly obvious if they had a sagittal crest as well.
