Sympathy for the media

You've got to feel sorry for the mainstream media. They try so hard to come up with stories about bad white people brutalizing innocent black people, and so many of these stories seem to backfire.

The latest in this long list seems to be the Trayvon Martin story. At first it appeared to be a simple gun-toting-white-racist-shoots-innocent-black-child story, so the networks quickly converted to all-Trayvon-all-the-time coverage. Much was made of the fact that Trayvon was unarmed and his shooter was not arrested. Those two stalwarts Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have made their appearance, thus giving the narrative their stamp of approval. The New Black Panther Party has declared that if the police don't "do their job," they will make sure justice is done in this case. Even President Obama got a piece of the action, stating that if he had a son, he would look like Trayvon. (Signifying what, exactly?)

My initial reaction was the same as everyone else's, that a misfit had gotten away with a senseless murder.

But now the story appears to be more complicated than the one the media was so eager to portray.

Turns out that George Zimmerman, the "white" man involved, is half-Hispanic (and looks all-Hispanic). He tutors children, including black children, for free in his spare time. And Trayvon assaulted him, punching him in the face and then, once he was on the ground, slamming his head into the cement a few times for good measure. Zimmerman yelled for help, then shot Trayvon in self-defense. When the police arrived, they noted that Zimmerman had a bloody nose, grass stains on his back, and lacerations on the back of his head consistent with his story. On top of that a witness has now come forward to corroborate Zimmerman's story. (I can't swear this new version is the real one, but my guess is that it is.)

Starting with Tawanna Brawley, on up through the Duke lacrosse case, and now with Trayvon, there have been a lot of incidents where the media has inflamed passions, provoking protests and black outrage, yet the facts just haven't panned out the way they were supposed to.

Oh well. Better luck next time.

You'd think the media would learn. But, it seems they don't want to learn. They merely want to show white people as racist oppressors, and black people as innocent victims.

Meanwhile, black people are 39 times more likely to commit a violent crime against whites than vice versa. But that fact is one the media prefers to bury.

What you described is not from any official source. It was intentionally leaked out. And I don't buy it. The kid is 6'3" 170 lbs. Zimmerman is 5'10" 250 lb. In your description he overpowered Zimmerman and beat the snot out of him. Yet instead of fending off this assault from his back, he was able to maneuver enough to pull his gun , unlock the safety and shoot him? Don't you think the kid would have stopped as second he saw the gun?
I think what MOST of the media is saying is that there is enough reasonable doubt that zimmerman should be incarcerated until the facts are presented. I believe it is outrageous that he was not.

BTW, if it were a black guy that attacked a white kid in a black neighborhood and the black guy was not arrested, people would be just as outraged.

As I said, I can't swear the new version is the correct one -- but I'm guessing it is. I didn't mention it, but the new version of the story is that Martin attacked Zimmerman from behind after Zimmerman lost sight of him, which would account for him getting the jump on him. Plus a guy who's 6'3" and 170 is often more athletic than some 5' 10" 250 pound fatso, which is what the pictures of Zimmerman make him look like. And maybe the kid didn't see the gun in the heat of the moment, or by the time he did, it was too late.

If the races were reversed, would there be just as much outrage? Possibly. But the cases the media likes to focus on are the white-on-black crimes of violence, which statistically are the rarity. The only case where there was a ton of publicity with the races reversed was the OJ case, and that was only because it involved someone who was already famous. If the races had been reversed in the Duke lacrosse case, it would never have gotten nearly that much publicity. Think of all the cases there've been of some football player or basketball player who rapes a white girl; they never get one tenth the publicity that the Duke lacrosse case got.

PS -- if the races had been reversed in this case, there would probably have been just as much local outrage; but it would never have had a chance to become a national issue because the media wouldn't have given it as much publicity. And there are no white Jesse Jacksons or Al Sharptons who fly in and hold candlelit vigils and marches every time a white is killed by a black.

The Martin family has already set up a donation web page for contributions and has moved to trademark his name. They really moved fast to cash in. First thing one would normally think of doing when things like this happen, eh?
The media has been totally dishonest, showing four year old pictures of Obama's son, trying to make him seem like some youthful choir boy and demonizing the neighborhood watch guy. The president couldn't pass up an opportunity to exploit the race issue by chiming in with his biased and prejudicial comments before he even knew what the facts of the case were. He should apologize but of course he won't, he's special and therefore exempt.

Come on now -- trademarking their son's name is just how some families express their grief.

Thank you, those are excellent articles which highlight the hypocrisy of that community perfectly.

An example of the media dishonesty in this case is the ubiquitous photo of Trayvon as a young teenager, though he was 17 years old.

Or the use of the term 'White Hispanic' to describe Zimmerman. Just as the media characterizes Obama as a 'white-black' president.
